Frequently Asked Questions

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a safe, popular cosmetic treatment for eradicating unwanted layers of fat that are highly resistant to dieting and exercise. Liposuction is not considered a weight loss procedure, although the results are significantly slimming. Our NYC Liposuction is performed with the use of a slender tube called a cannula that is inserted through tiny incisions at the target areas of the body. The fat is then suctioned out through the cannula.

There are several variations on liposuction, which include laser lipo, ultrasonic lipo, super wet lipo, power assisted lipo and SculptSure. Dr. Scarpidis is a seasoned veteran of all of these techniques and will simply choose the best one for your aesthetic goals and wishes.

Who is a good candidate?

The ideal candidate for liposuction is within a normal weight range for their body and has reasonable expectations for improvement in their physique rather than for perfection. Clients should be in good mental and physical health, with no major medical issues.

Who is not a good candidate?

Those who are looking to lose a significant amount of weight, or who are looking to reduce cellulite will not find the solution to their needs in the liposuction procedure. Dr. Scarpidis can speak with you about alternatives to lipo, which may include traditional plastic surgery.

Are there any age requirements for liposuction?

Dr. Scarpidis recommends patients be at least 18 at the time of their liposuction in New York, and he will perform on clients up to the age of around 75. Skin elasticity plays a major role in whether lipo is the right choice of treatment, and with advancing years, this can be a factor in eliminating certain candidates. Rest assured, however, the doctor can make recommendations for alternatives to lipo that may achieve the same cosmetic outcomes.

What areas of the body can liposuction treat?

Liposuction is an excellent method of reducing fat in the abdomen, hips, inner and outer thighs, the waist, the back, the male chest, the neck, the chin, arms, knees, ankles, buttocks and even in the cheeks.

How much fat can liposuction remove?

The removal of fat must be tailored to the individual’s unique anatomy, so that the proportions are shaped in a natural, elegant fashion. In other words, just the right amount of fat must be removed, neither too much nor too little. This is best achieved by a skilled, board certified plastic surgeon with years of experience, such as Dr. Scarpidis. In some cases, as little as one pound of fat may be excised, while in other situations as much as 10 lbs. of fat may be removed. The average is around 5 lbs.

What should I look for in a liposuction surgeon?

While cost is a major factor in choosing a New York liposuction surgeon, this should not outweigh your concerns about safety as well as artistry. It’s important to work with someone who provides an in-depth consultation and is able to answer all your questions and concerns without rushing you towards sealing the deal. It’s also valuable to choose a doctor with whom you feel comfortable communicating and with whom you can develop a sense of trust.

Prior results are also a good indicator of what to expect, so it’s prudent to review the doctor’s portfolio of before and after photos and to ask for more pictures if you do not immediately see any clients with your body type.

What should I look for in an outpatient facility?

Liposuction can be performed in any safe, clean accredited medical center with state-of-the-art equipment and technology. While a hospital setting is always appropriate for the procedure, outpatient facilities provide greater convenience in terms of waiting times, and more privacy and discretion for the client. Outpatient centers also tend to be more visually appealing and comfortable than hospitals.

What is liposuction recovery like?

This will depend on whether you receive general anesthesia/IV sedation, or undergo wet liposuction with the injection of an anesthetic-based solution, which numbs the body prior to treatment. With general anesthesia, you will require someone to drive you home, and you may need more time to rest and recover. With topical numbing, you will usually be able to return to work and normal activities within a couple of days.

After the procedure, the doctor will place drains to excise excess fluids from the body. He or she will also provide a compression garment, which helps to limit swelling and also to keep the body’s new shape intact during the healing process.

All liposuction procedures are performed at Scarpidis Aesthetics’ accredited outpatient medical center in New York City. This immaculate, luxurious facility is home to world class surgical equipment and technology, along with a stylish, climate-adjusted reception area and tranquil recovery suites.

Traditional lipo

Traditional liposuction is excellent for handling large volume fat loss in an effort to streamline and reshape the torso. It involves manually flushing out the excess fat with a cannula and is most often performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation.

Revision lipo

Sometimes a client does not achieve the outcome they desire with primary liposuction. This can be the result of subpar work on the part of the surgeon, or it can occur as a result of changes in the figure over time. Dr. Scarpidis has the expertise and vision to perform liposuction correctly the first time, but also the intricate knowledge and artistry to revise and improve another surgeon’s work.

Tumescent lipo

The tumescent approach involves injecting an anesthetic-based solution into the target areas before suctioning begins. This helps to break up the fat into more manageably removable units, and also ensures that bruising is kept to a minimum. Because there is a numbing agent in the injected fluids, no general anesthesia is required, and patients can return home the same day.

Ultrasonic lipo

One of the newest and most innovative liposuction techniques is ultrasonic lipo. It relies on sound wave power to gently emulsify the fat cells prior to suctioning, thus shortening treatment time and downtime as well. The sound energy does not disturb any surrounding healthy cells, tissue, nerves or muscles, so ultrasonic lipo is considered exceptionally safe.

Power assisted lipo (PAL)

Unlike traditional lipo which relies upon rigorous manual excision of the fat, power assisted liposuction uses a motorized cannula, making the treatment more gentle and more efficient. PAL can be more precise in its results, and may be employed to target the delicate regions of the neck, chin and face. Post-operative discomfort is minimized, and downtime in general is reduced.

SmartLipo/laser lipo

An exciting breakthrough in cosmetic science, laser lipo penetrates the fat cells and liquefies them, while also regenerating the two natural-occurring body proteins – collagen and elastin – that are responsible for skin suppleness and youthfulness. The result after the procedure is that not only is the body sculpted and slimmed, but the skin boasts a gorgeous, smooth glow.

Sculpsure is a non-surgical, non-invasive body contouring method that relies entirely on potent laser energy to melt away the excess fat. Complication risks are therefore eliminated, and downtime is greatly reduced. In addition to these benefits, SculpSure triggers the regrowth of collagen and elastin, two fountain of youth-type proteins that tend to dwindle with advancing years.

Super wet lipo

The super wet technique uses less injected fluids than tumescent liposuction, but has the same benefits, including less bruising and reduced downtimes. Unlike the tumescent approach, however, super wet lipo does require general anesthesia, so patients will need to have a friend or family member accompany them home from the office.
